Week one of the AWIHL season has been done & dusted, with no surprises really coming out of the weekends fixtures. With both last seasons finalist having early dominance over there other league challengers, the biggest impact, was Adelaide sounding an alarm to the rest of the competition, that the five year dominance isn't going to end anytime soon.
The Adealaide Assassins hosted the Brisbane Goannas and quickly showed the rest of the competition, that they are, in fact the defending champions and they mean business. Dismantling last seasons bottom finishing team for all to see, putting 8 goals past them in the process during the first round of matches. The weekends second game was a much closer encounter, finishing 3-1 and giving Brisbane something to take away from the match, although the signs aren't looking good for the Brisbane club, they can take something out of the weekends result. Brisbane conceded a total of 59 goals for the 2009/2010 season, letting in 8 goals in the first match isn't exactly a great starting point, but if they can tighten up against the likes of Sydney & Melbourne, it's a long season & anything is possible.
Sydney v Melbourne was the second fixture to take place, in what was a slightly tighter affair with both teams able to find the goals on various occasions. Sydney walked away with two wins from two games, yet had to work hard for the victory in each of their games. Scorelines finishing 6-3 & 5-2 showed that the fight will be on once the season is in full swing, as both clubs fight for a finals berth & look to be apart of it come February next year. As both clubs look towards being that second contender against Adelaide for the Championship, things look as though they will be heating up once we go deeper into the season.
Adelaide once again look as though they will be the team to beat, as they flexed their muscle in what was a sensational week one of the AWIHL. They have quality all over the ice, which they have shown throughout the past fives seasons. Things seem to be going along nicely for the South Australian team, as they continually to perform like a well oiled machine.
The most interesting aspect during week one, is the fight for that second finals position seems to be locked in for a tight battle. If early indications are true, Adelaide will comfortably win the league this season, which only leaves Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane to fight it out for that second spot & chance to play finals at the Icehouse. Nothing in sport is ever set in stone, many factors can change a season. Adelaide although look the be the dominant squad early on, could have things changed in an instant. Injuries to key players, or a drop in form could be several areas which may hamper their quest for a sixth straight Championship.
After week one of the season now gone, one thing is for certain, it's going to be one hell of a ride the in AWIHL for season 2010/11.
